Israeli court extends detention of Gaza aid flotilla activists

An Israeli court has extended the detention of two activists from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla who were seized by Israeli forces last week near Greece.

The Ashkelon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday approved a request to hold Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish national, and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila until 10 May, Miriam Azem of the legal group Adalah told Al Jazeera.

The two were among dozens of campaigners taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near Greece on 30 April.

Organisers say around 180 activists were detained when the vessels were stopped, with Abu Keshek and Avila the only individuals transferred to Israel for questioning, where they remain in custody.
